Situated at only 26 kilometers from Curtea de Arges, on the Transfagarasan Road, between Pleasa and Vidraru mountainsides, there lies the accumulation lake and dam – Vidraru. An imposing building on the lower course of the Arges river. It was build between 1960 and 1965, being the first arch dam constructed in Romania. It has a height of 166m, and the length of the crown is 305m. The thickness of the dam at base is 25m and up top is of 6m. The dam, at the finalisation date, height wise was the 8th place in Europe, and 20th place worldwide. Thousands of people drilled underground galleries as long as 42 kilometers, a million cube meters of concrete were poured, and the human sacrifices count to 80. The surface of the lake is 893 acres, the length is 10.3km, the maximum width is 2.2km, at the Wolf’s Valley – Calugarita, and has a circumference of 28km. The depth of the water is 155m near the curved road on top. Initially projected for the production of electrical energy, the dam now represents a welcoming tourist attraction for leisure. Today, on Vidraru Lake, there are numerous activities taking place, such as boat rides, and canoeing.
