One of the most well-known and beautiful medieval fortifications in Romania, the Poienari Fortress, is waiting to be discovered by curious tourists who are coming to the northern region of Arges county. In order to reach the fortress, you have to climb the 1480 stairs, which cross a beautiful beech wood, but once you are there, the sights are astonishing. The fortress was the latest refuge of the ruler Vlad Tepes, before going to Transylvania. It was as well one of the main fortresses that have contributed to the final victory against the ottomans. Between 1969 and 1972, the walls of the fortress had been consolidated, and the stairs finalized, in order to have access in the best possible condition to visit the fortress. From the top, between the ruins, the tourist charges up his soul with an unique scenery through wildness and splendour.
